2015 Nikolaus Party

Dear Members and Friends of the German-American Club of the Carolinas,

Like every year, we are looking forward to celebrating our Nikolaus Party!  The event will take place on Sunday, December 13, at 3:00 p.m.  This year Doerte and Karsten Ingwersen have been kind enough to offer their house for the event.  We very much appreciate their generosity.  Their address is 547 Suncrest Court, Lyman, SC 29365.  This event is meant not only to be an event for our children.  It is also meant to be a cozy get-together for all adults.  Food and drinks will be provided.  Like always, we ask everybody to bring a snack, like Christmas cookies.  If you are a parent or grandparent, you can bring a gift for your little ones.  Make sure that the note on the gift, which Nikolaus will read off, is written in English.

Please know that parents need to supervise their children, and everybody needs to behave responsibly.  Neither the Ingwersens nor the GAC board will be held liable for any injury or damage.

We hope to see you all there.

Best regards,

Dirk

World-Famous Amarcord at Converse College - NOVEMBER 4

Dear Members and Friends of the German-American Club of the Carolinas:

Please join us for a wonderful evening of music with Amarcord, one of the world's leading vocal ensembles.  They will be performing in Spartanburg on Wednesday, November 4th, 7:00 p.m. at Converse College in the Daniel Recital Hall.  The musical activities of this quintet center around Mediaeval and Renaissance compositions along with collaborations with contemporary composers such as Bernd Franke, Ivan Moody, Sidney M. Boquiren, Marcus Ludwig, Siegfried Thiele, and Dimitri Terzaki, all of whom have written pieces especially for Amarcord.  Amarcord's repertoire includes various thematic programs ranging from madrigals and romantic compositions to a cappella arrangements of famous songs spanning all facets of vocal music.

Amarcord was founded in 1992 by members of the famous Thomanerchor Leipzig in Germany. All five members of Amarcord have had a very special musical education.  The Thomanerchor Leipzig was founded in 1212 and is one of the oldest choirs in the world.  The famous Johann Sebastian Bach was the choir director of the Thomanerchor from 1723 to 1750.

The concert is presented by Converse College and BMW.  Please find details along with ticket purchasing information at the following link.

Spartanburg To Form Sister City Alliance With Landshut, Germany

Several GAC members are involved with the Sister Cities International of Greater Spartanburg organization.  At a meeting with Spartanburg’s City Council on Monday, September 28th, they convinced the City Council to support forming a sister city relationship with Landshut, Germany.  The Dean of Computer Science from the University of Applied Sciences (UAS) Landshut and dual-degree students from UAS Landshut and USC Upstate were present at the meeting.  Below are newspaper articles and photos.

Local chapter of Sister Cities International seeking council support | GoUpstate.com: "SCIGS noted that 155 of the more than 1,200 international firms in South Carolina have facilities in Spartanburg County. Of these 155, about one-third are German. SCIGS believes a city-to-city agreement between Spartanburg and Landshut will foster business relationships and economic development, promote the exchange of students and academics and enhance cultural understanding through collaboration."
